(Part 4) What is more important listening or asking questions?

So far, I focused on the fact that both listening and asking questions can have either a positive or detrimental effect not only in the communication process but also in the relationship.

The purpose of asking a question is to trigger an answer. More importantly, it is to engage in a conversation. Therefore, it does not make sense to ask great questions if then you do not listen to what the other person has to say. Thus, the question is, “are you listening to respond or to understand?”

On the other hand, listening is key but asking the right questions could be also more important. It doesn’t matter if you do a great listening but, as a coach, you are not triggering the answers that will help the other person.

In summary, both skills are important and powerful in the pursuit of having a great conversation.
