Mental Models

A mental model refers to the specific way in which a person processes information and makes sense of their world. This includes how that person understands their relationships with others and the world surrounding them. One key factor that shapes our mental model lies in the emotional experiences we lived in the past.

This framework is a powerful tool that helps the client reflect on how they talk to themselves and invites them to reframe that narrative. There are three simple steps to follow:

STEP 1: Identify a recurrent theme in the client's narrative. For example, "I cannot fail", "It has to be my way", "I'm not good enough", etc.

STEP 2: Jot down 3-5 positive and negative results of that way of thinking. Facts that as a result of that mentality can be considered positive and negative outcomes.

STEP 3: The challenge here is to reframe that mental model in a positive way. This is, having reflected on the positive and negative outcomes, the idea is to create a different speech. It has to be short, memorable, and written in "your voice."
